Science Trek
Science Trek is a place where parents, kids, and educators can watch short, educational videos on a variety of science topics. Every Monday Science Trek releases a new video that introduces children to math, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career potentials in a fun, informative way.(SCIENCE TREK MUSIC) JOAN CARTAN-HANSEN, HOST: Guess what is the most abundant element in the universe?
It's hydrogen.
About 90 percent of the atoms in the universe are hydrogen.
And, although hydrogen is the most abundant element in your body, it only third by mass.
That's because hydrogen is so light.
Only two elements are liquid at room temperature: bromine and mercury.
When you combine two or more different elements, you get what's called a compound.
Water is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.
This compound is written as H 2 O.
When something becomes a compound, it becomes its own unique thing.
Sodium by itself can explode in water and chlorine by itself is a poisonous gas, but as a compound, they make sodium chloride, better known as table salt.
And there are 10 million known compounds which can be made with carbon.
For example, a single human hair is made up of about a million carbon atoms.
