About the Show
The 2025 LA Wildfires set a record as one of the most expensive and destructive in US history. As environmental shifts accelerates extreme fire conditions and communities expand into fire-prone landscapes, these devastating wildfires are becoming more common. But are they inevitable?
Maiya May travels to Los Angeles to meet with fire chiefs, first responders, survivors, and scientists to uncover the factors that fueled this firestorm. From record-breaking heat and prolonged drought to the challenges of firefighting in extreme winds, she learns how a perfect storm of conditions turned these fires into a historic catastrophe.
How do we protect homes, lives and communities in an emerging era of megafires? What role do land management, urban planning and policy play in mitigating future disasters? And with wildfire a permanent part of California's landscape, how can we shift the paradigm from simply fighting against it to living alongside it? We need to get these answers right before the next firestorm strikes.
