Running through October 15th, Americans celebrate the achievements of famous Hispanic Americans and show appreciation for Latino cultures and traditions.
Why does it begin on September 15th?
As it turns out, 5 countries all observe their independence days on that date with Mexico and Chile in very close succession.
The observance was originally established as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson in 1968 to "honor the impact that people of Hispanic descent have had in the United States."
20 years later, the observance was expanded into a full month during Ronald Reagan's presidency!
