Ruston was born as a mining encampment next to the Tacoma Smelting and Refining Company during the Industrial Revolution. William R. Rust sold the smelter to the Guggenheim brothers' American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO) who operated the smelter until 1985 when environmental regulations forced its closure. Author Karen Pickett and others talk about how this historical town has evolved.
